But the PCI DSS controls really do work—since 2010 we’ve investigated hundreds of breaches, and not one of these companies was compliant with all the PCI DSS requirements at the time of the attack.

    But it’s important to remember that compliance is just the start. Complying with PCI DSS can help you avoid a breach, but it should be part of a wider risk management and security strategy. One that helps you keep ahead of the attackers’ tactics and stay up-to-date with the latest methods for reducing risk, such as tokenization and end-to-end encryption.

    The Verizon 2018 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) found that most security incidents in the retail sector involved denial of service and web application attacks. Payment card skimmers rounded out the top three attack patterns, but the majority of all incidents in the retail industry targeted the victim’s online operations. And although payment card information was the attacker’s usual target, in 44% of cases it was personal information or credentials that was stolen.

    This highlights the changing retail cybersecurity landscape. You need to protect your physical assets while securing your online and mobile environments from the onslaught of attacks that come their way. And you also need to safeguard types of data that you wouldn’t traditionally manage, without compromising your payment card security.

    The challenge for retailers is safeguarding all that data while making it available to all who need it. Locking down all your data behind a traditional perimeter just won’t work. To deliver great, seamless experiences across channels you need to be able to share data with your stores, customers and partners—quickly, and efficiently.

    New approaches like software-defined perimeter and frictionless authentication can help retailers get the best of both worlds. They enable robust retail cybersecurity, without adversely impacting the experience for customers or employees.
